Speaker: Louise Morrell, M.D., Medical Director, Lynn Cancer Institute, Boca Raton Regional Hospital Program: Newest Advances in Cancer Genetics Louise Morrell, M.D. Medical Director, Lynn Cancer Institute Boca Raton Regional Hospital Louise Morrell, M.D. is the Medical Director of the Eugene M. & Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute. She is a board certified medical oncologist, specializing in cancer genetics and breast cancer care.
Dr. Morrell performs genetic testing, identifying individuals at the highest risk for breast, ovarian, colon, and other cancers, and provides an ongoing prevention program for all patients that are determined to be in a high risk category for the disease. She has been a champion of multi-modality care for cancer patients, and is recognized throughout south Florida for her role as an educator and spokesperson for genetic counseling and breast cancer awareness and prevention. In addition, she serves as an advocate for the research and development of advances in imaging and treatment of breast disease.
She graduated from Washington University School of Medicine and completed her fellowship training at Barnes Hospital in Saint Louis, Missouri. In 1989 she joined the full-time clinical faculty at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami, where she helped to establish the clinical breast cancer program and participated in research.
In 1995, Dr. Morrell became the Medical Director for the Center for Breast Care at the Christine E. Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute. Under her stewardship the Center had the most experienced & comprehensive program in the region, seeing 90,000 patients a year. In 1996 she created the Center’s unique high-risk and genetic assessment programs which became an integral part of the Hospital’s initiative to expand the Lynn Cancer Institute and build its 90,000 square foot state of the art Sandler Pavilion.
In 2010 Dr. Morrell was appointed the Medical Director of the Eugene M. & Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. She oversees the comprehensive clinical care services at the Institute, leads the tumor board and has established the Breast Cancer Multidisciplinary Clinic, which now offers women newly diagnosed with breast cancer multiple subspecialty consultations in a single visit to the Lynn Cancer Institute.
Dr. Louise Morrell has been an integral part of the Cancer Center development team at Boca Raton Regional Hospital, contributing to all aspects of program development at the Lynn Cancer Institute.
Jerry J. Fedele President & CEO Boca Raton Regional Hospital Jerry Fedele has more than 25 years of health care experience as a healthcare lawyer and chief executive officer in academic and regional hospital settings. Over the last 13 years, Mr. Fedele has focused on restructuring and improving financially challenged hospitals. He is credited with saving a major academic hospital and three community hospital affiliates from the largest health care bankruptcy in US history through removing the hospitals from bankruptcy proceedings, restructuring debt, implementing a financial turnaround exceeding $140 million dollars, and completing a transformational refinancing exceeding $750 million. Mr. Fedele is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of Boca Raton Regional Hospital where he led an initiative that resulted in operations improvement of $60 million over 18 months. Boca Raton Regional Hospital is an advanced, tertiary hospital that includes the #1 program in cardiac surgery, #1 program in cardiology, #1 program in stroke care, and #2 program in gastroenterology in the state of Florida as listed by HealthGrades in 2011. The Hospital provides oncology services that are competitive with major academic medical centers nationally, is ranked as a Top Regional Hospital by U.S. News & World Report, has been named a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence eight years in a row and one of America’s Top 50 Hospitals by Healthgrades. Mr. Fedele is a former adjunct professor at Duquesne University School of Law and has lectured frequently on leadership and health law matters at Carnegie Mellon University, The University of Pittsburgh, and Florida Atlantic University. Throughout his career, Mr. Fedele has served on several boards, including The Hospital and Health System Association of Pennsylvania, The University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, and Community College of Allegheny County. Mr. Fedele currently serves as a member of the boards of directors of the Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce, George Snow Scholarship Fund, VHA Southeast, and PGA Allianz Tour Event. Mr. Fedele was the recipient of the Boca Raton Rotary Club OPAL Award for outstanding achievement in healthcare, was recognized by the South Florida Business Journal as an Ultimate CEO of Palm Beach County, and The Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce Business Leader of the Year. Mr. Fedele is a supporter of higher education through the George Snow Scholarship Fund where he participated as a community dancer in the 2010 Boca Ballroom Battle. Mr. Fedele received his Bachelors of Science in Mathematics with honors and Master of Business Administration degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and a Juris Doctor degree from Duquesne University School of Law where he was class valedictorian.
