Leading Breast Cancer Expert Joins Florida Atlantic University as Its New Vice President of Research BOCA RATON, Fla. (December 17, 2014) – A renowned breast cancer researcher with more than 20 years experience will lead Florida Atlantic University into a new era of innovation as its vice president for research. Daniel C. Flynn, who begins at FAU on Jan. 5, was selected after a national search that attracted 76 applicants. FAU President John Kelly said the University’s research activity is central to its overall academic standing. Flynn is a critical thinker with a deep background in academic scholarship, technology transfer, research integrity, research facilities oversight, faculty mentoring and student research at all levels, he said. “We are hiring stellar faculty whose mere presence will be game-changers for the university, and their association with FAU will attract the best faculty and the brightest students,” Kelly said. “We are very fortunate to have attracted such an acclaimed researcher.” Flynn comes to South Florida from Delaware, where he is the associate dean for research at the University of Delaware, College of Health Sciences. He previously held positions at the Commonwealth Medical College in Scranton, Pa., including associate dean for research and economic development. Further, he was appointed to numerous leadership roles at West Virginia University in Morgantown, including director of cancer cell biology research and graduate training programs at the university’s Health Science Center. He also was deputy director of the university’s Mary Bab Randolph Cancer Center. “FAU has very talented faculty that represent cutting-edge research in all its colleges,” Flynn said. “This is a very exciting opportunity for me personally, and I look forward to helping expand FAU’s research portfolio university-wide.” President Kelly thanked John Newcomer, M.D., who has served as interim vice president for research for the last year. His stewardship helped maintain FAU’s already strong research activity, Kelly said. Newcomer will continue his important role as executive vice-dean of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine. -FAU-
