NCCI’s chief information officer (CIO) and chief data officer, Michael Spears, was recognized by South Florida Business & Wealth Magazine with a prestigious Apogee Award on November 8, 2017 at Broken Sound Club in Boca Raton. Michael was selected for this honor out of more than 300 nominations as a CIO who is dedicated to their industry and community. As CIO at NCCI, Spears is responsible for oversight of all technology, application development, and the Program Management Office. The Information Technology division provides a robust infrastructure for housing the nation’s largest repository of workers compensation information as well as vast suite of custom-built applications to support NCCI’s unique role in the industry. In his role as chief data officer, Mr. Spears oversees NCCI's data collection, quality validation, coordination with industry groups on data reporting rules and standards, and the deployment of reporting tools for data providers. His team is responsible for managing hundreds of millions of data records on virtually every aspect of workers compensation insurance that NCCI collects on behalf of insurance NCCI affiliates, insurance regulators, and independent bureaus. During his career at NCCI, Mr. Spears has held a variety of management positions within the areas of Information Technology, Business Development, Product Management, Experience Rating, Customer Service, and Assigned Risk. Mr. Spears received a BBA in Computer Information Systems and an MBA, both from the University of Miami. He has also completed executive level management courses at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
